1.  Nothing!  Relaxing at the beach is great!
2.  The umbrella is too small
3.  This is a work day and they are playing hookie
4.  Poor sitting posture risking back pain
*Answer:  4:  beach chairs have little to no back support and with prolonged sitting are a disaster waiting to happen!  Having pain or stiffness when rising from this position is a warning sign for onset of back pain.  You can used a rolled up beach towel to act as a lumbar support!

 

How can I avoid neck and back pain in bed?

During the history section of my evaluations I often learn that people love to read or watch television in bed.  When I question them about their position, I often find they are sitting with pillows or wedges behind them in a slumped position.   Even with a firm wedge, it is difficult to assume a good sitting posture.  With your legs straight out, added pressure is placed on the lumbar spine causing it to curve into flexion.  This may be a better position for reading in bed, but will require frequent breaks and movement out of this position.

  Some of you may recognize this position from the early exercises you performed to address your back pain.  This can be a good position for reading in bed.
